Mbawta Umbrella

Mbawta is the Anaiwan word for magpie.

This interactive artwork features a Soundbeam, an instrument that uses ultrasonic sensing technology to detect distance and translate movement into sound and light. As participants move within the beam, their gestures trigger magpie calls accompanied by dynamic light visualisations.

To make the magpie sing, place your hand within the beam of light projected toward the ground. Slowly move your hand up and down while keeping it inside the light beam to create and shape the magpie's song.

Through movement, visitors are invited to explore the relationship between people, technology, language, and the natural environment, bringing the voice of Mbawta to life through their own gestures.
